Mobile app monitors electric-vehicle battery metrics

Software developer Xatori has released its second mobile application targeted at electric-vehicle owners.
The Apple iOS app for iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices is called GreenCharge, and it offers features for tracking battery data and metrics. So, for example, an electric-vehicle owner can see how much range is left before a charge is needed; he or she can run analytics on daily, weekly and monthly driving patterns; and the owner can also calculate savings that differentiate electric vehicles from gasoline-powered automobiles.

It’s in the iPhone and iPad — though Apple doesn’t officially acknowledge its existence. Indeed, it’s in an increasing number of smartphone screens and tablets; at last count, more than 500 million devices carried it worldwide. You likely look at it all the time without noticing it.
What is it? Gorilla Glass, a super-strong, lightweight 21st-century glass made by Pyrex manufacturer Corning. Now the company is preparing to unveil a brand new version of the material, Gorilla Glass 2, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The SkyLight allows you to take your iPhone, Android phone, or any other that might still exist and turn it into a microscopic eyepiece for the world.
Its creator is medical designer Andy Miller. He has already designed the Global Focus microscope, a light, cheap fluorescent microscope for developing countries.

Verizon to sell HTC Rezound with Beats audio

HTC Corp (2498.TW) said its latest smartphone, the Rezound, will be its first U.S. phone to include audio technology from Beats Electronics, a company it took control of earlier this year.
The Rezound will go on sale at No. 1 U.S. mobile service Verizon Wireless on November 14 for $299.99, including a Beats branded headset.
Qualcomm: Windows 8 will take us beyond smartphones

Qualcomm’s stellar fiscal fourth quarter yielded a bevy of goodies beyond the core financials: Executives said there are 350 devices in development based on the company’s Snapdragon chip and Windows 8 means a business model beyond smartphones.
The company’s quarter and outlook for fiscal 2012 was strong. Qualcomm is riding a 3G wave in emerging markets and prepping a dual-mode Long Term Evolution chipset that will fuel sales in developing markets. Add it up and momentum abounds for Qualcomm.
