Apple and Google now control well over two-thirds of the U.S. smartphone market, comScore‘s latest report shows.
Android’s dominance over the U.S. smartphone market increased from 38.1% to 43.7%, and iOS’s market share increased from 26.6% to 27.3% in the three months ending with August 2011.
While Android’s growth was much more explosive than iOS’s, the other three smartphone platforms – RIM’s BlackBerry, Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Symbian – all lost a chunk of the market.

Symbian doesn’t have much more to lose, now holding only 1.8% of the market. Microsoft can take comfort in that it’s share only dropped from 5.8% to 5.7%, while the first Windows Phone 7-based Nokia handsets are yet to hit stores. RIM’s drop from 24.7% to 19.7% is much more dire, showing that BlackBerry OS currently doesn’t have what it takes to compete against modern Android and iOS-based smartphones.

On the manufacturer front, Apple has experienced the largest growth with a 1.1% increase in total U.S. mobile subscribers, solidifying its fourth place on the list. Samsung has also done well, increasing by 0.5% to 25.3%, holding onto its first place.
The second and third positions are still held by LG and Motorola, both of which experienced a minor decrease in market share. RIM is number five on the list; having lost a full percentage point and falling further behind Apple.
