Emergency calls to 911 expected to become more reliable with the FCC's decision to treat VoIP service providers the same as landline and cell phone providers.
The Federal Communications Commission has decided to require all interconnected VoIP service providers to report network outages in much the way landline and cell phone service providers must follow.
Cisco to challenge Microsoft Skype deal at EU court

Cisco has said it will challenge Microsoft's $8.5bn (£5.4bn) takeover of Skype at the EU's top court.
The networking giant said conditions needed to be set to ensure Microsoft would not block other video services.
BlackBerry faces new challenge from U.S. agency

In another blow for beleaguered BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, the U.S. federal government's main procurement agency is issuing iPhones and Android-based devices to some of its 17,000 workers.
While the General Services Administration does not impose its purchasing decisions on other parts of the government, the terms and conditions it negotiates can be used as a blueprint for other agencies.
Cisco predicts more mobile devices than people by 2016

Between 2011 and 2016 the amount of mobile data traffic will grow at a compound annual rate of 78 percent as the number of mobile devices connected to the Internet exceeds the number of people on Earth in four years' time, according to a study by Cisco Systems Inc.
The United Nations projects that world population will reach 7.3 billion by 2016. By that time, according to Cisco's annual visual networking index forecast published on Tuesday, there will be more than 10 billion devices, generating global mobile data traffic of 10.8 exabytes per month.

Apple Inc.’s newest lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co., set for a hearing May 2, increases the number of Samsung devices that Apple argues infringe its products.
Apple seeks a court order blocking the alleged infringement in smartphones such as Samsung’s Galaxy S II Skyrocket and Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, which use Google Inc.’s Android operating system, and Samsung’s Galaxy 4.0 and 5.0 media players.

Cisco sees profits rise over 43%

Technology giant Cisco, saw a 43.5% rise in net profits to $2.2bn (£1.3bn) for the three months to 28 January 2012, compared with the same period in 2011.
Cisco's results come after a prolonged period of cost-cutting, which saw the firm shed more than 6,000 jobs in 2011. Cisco increased its dividend by two cents to eight cents per share.
Ofcom targets phone and broadband switching 'slammers'

Landline phone and internet providers which switch customers to their service without their consent - a process known as "slamming" - are being targeted by Ofcom.
The telecoms regulator says that an estimated 520,000 UK households were "slammed" last year. It argues that all switches should be verified by a third party to prevent abuses.

Ofcom proposes Openreach broadband and phone price cut

BT Group will have to cut the prices it charges internet providers and others who sell on services using its lines, Ofcom says.
The telecoms regulator wants the cost for use of a broadband and phone line to fall from £91.50 per year to £87.41. The cost of using a broadband line only should also drop from £14.70 per year to £11.92, Ofcom said.
